B-SQUARED

for Bankstown Arts Centre Arts Alive 2024

B-Squared (Bankstown Squared) is a site responsive and ephemeral artwork for Bankstown Arts Centre’s outdoor arts activation event Arts Alive 2024. B-Squared is an interactive object which produces effects that verge on the digital.

The artwork utilises over 100 mirrored strips organised in a zig-zag pattern to display a multitude of images reflected onto the same surface. This phenomena is possible through the lenticular effect, a proven effect which utilises perspective to reveal and hide two sides of a triangle.

B-SQUARED produces a unique visual effect of two images spliced together, as if the body is being fragmented and multiplied (or squared). By reflecting the viewer and simultaneously drawing in its surrounding landscape through its reflective surfaces, the artwork inspires movement and exploration in order to decipher its illusion.

The use of intentional materials that capture the illusionary phenomena creates new understandings of our own senses creating a memory of being immersed in Bankstown. When people see something change right before their very eyes, a magical moment, becomes a point of inquiry, questioning and ultimately curiosity.

The work will act as a 3D mirror which demonstrates how an image can appear and disappear as a viewer walks past, encouraging purposeful walking as a mode of discovery.
